The cause of cancer has long been the topic of discussion in many medical debates. As research and data tell us, there are several causes of cancer. Cancer itself is a complex condition; several causes and factors affect the growth rate of cancer. Consequently, people often ask about how much correlation cancer and genetics have in common.

How many cancers are hereditary

According to research, the answer is multi-faceted; only 5-10% of all cancers are hereditary. Lifestyle and environmental factors. So, all cancers start from a mutation in genes. But some people inherit gene mutations that lead to cancer growth.

Cancers resulting from hereditary gene mutations are called “hereditary cancer.” Alternatively, cancers not caused by inherited gene mutations are “sporadic cancer.” The most common sign indicating a hereditary cancer is someone in your immediate family has a specific type of cancer.

Are most cancers hereditary?

As we stated before, most cancers are not hereditary. Most cancers affecting people nowadays are sporadic cancer. There are two main types of inherited cancer mutations that increase the risk of developing a more severe cancer type down the line.

Those two cancer mutations are BRCA1 and BRCA2. Women who inherit the BRCA1 cancer mutation have an increased risk of developing ovarian and breast cancer. Men who inherit the BRCA mutation are at increased risk of developing prostate and breast cancer.

Cowden syndrome is the result of mutations in the PTEN gene. Women with Cowden syndrome are at an increased risk of developing uterine and breast cancer. Men with this syndrome have a higher risk of developing thyroid cancer.

The odds of you passing down a cancer-causing genetic mutation is 50/50. Just because you have a genetic mutation doesn’t mean your child will. Similarly, if your parent has a genetic mutation, that doesn’t mean you will too.
